How to learn from sitcoms
Every person learning a new language wants a patient native-speaker friend who will politely correct their mistakes and teach them new vocabulary. But native speakers can be hard to find. If you’re having trouble finding one, American sitcoms (情景喜剧) are one way to fill the gap. Such shows are rich mines of information about American culture. They also offer useful language instruction. Watching them will help you expand your vocabulary and teach you correct language usage in different situations. Best of all, sitcoms are a fun way to learn.
To help you get the most out of watching US TV shows, we have put together the following useful guide.
Before watching
Gather a group of friends before you sit down to watch a movie or a TV show. This will make it easier for you to practice some of the English words and expressions you hear. To aid your conversations, find out as much information as you can about the movie or TV show’s basic plot, characters, actors, director and awards. Be sure to have all of your discussions in English.
While watching
You might need to watch an episode, or certain scenes of a drama, a couple of times. This will depend on your level of English, and on the complexity of the drama. For a complicated show, watch it in English with Chinese subtitles (字幕) first. This will help you get the gist of the themes and plot. When you’re done, start thinking about issues to discuss with your friends.
Then, a couple of days later, watch the piece again — this time with subtitles in English. Focus on the language. As you are watching, write down at least 10 new words and 5 phrases or expressions. Guess their meaning. Later, check your guess by looking up the words and expressions in a dictionary, or by asking a native English speaker. Remember, some of the language will likely not be found in your textbooks! Be careful about how you use the words!
Finally, watch the piece a third time, in English only, without subtitles. If you have fully mastered the meaning, lip-synch (对口型) the dialogues from the script with the actors. Try to memorize and act out your favorite scenes.
Ultimately, you must take responsibility for your own learning. Let watching movies and TV series teach you about life in other countries and help improve your knowledge of English.

I stopped to watch my little girl playing in her room. In one hand was a plastic phone; in the other a toy broom. I listened as she was speaking to her doll. And I’ll never forget the words she said, even though it was pretended.
She said, “Suzie’s in the corner because she’s not been very good. She didn’t listen to a word I said or do the things she should.” In the corner I saw her baby doll all dressed in lace and pink. It was obvious she’d been put there to sit alone and think.
My daughter continued her “conversation,” as I sat down on the floor. She said, “I’m all fed up. I just don’t know what to do with her any more. She cries whenever I have to work and wants to play games, too. She tries to help me with the dishes, but her arms just cannot reach …. And she doesn’t know how to fold towels. I don’t have the time to teach. I have a lot of work to do and a big house to keep clean. I don’t have the time to sit and play — don’t you know what I mean?”
And that day I thought a lot about making some changes in my life, as I listened to her innocent words that cut me like a knife. I hadn’t been paying enough attention to what I hold most dear.
But now my attitude has changed, because, in my heart, I realize …. I’ve seen the world in a different light through my little darling’s eyes. So, let the cobwebs have the corners and the dustbunnies rule the floor, I’m not going to worry about keeping up with them any more.
I’m going to fill the house with memories of a child and her mother …. For we are granted only one childhood, and we will never get another.
What was the little girl doing with her doll?
Q. She was dressing up her doll.
R. She was playing the doll with her friend Suzie.
S. She was talking to her mother.
T. She was punishing her doll.
Which statement is TRUE about the mother’s behaviors before that day?
U. She spent a lot of time with her daughter talking to her.
V. She was busy cleaning the house with little time spared for her daughter.
W. She didn’t show love to her child.
X. She always dressed up baby dolls with her daughter.
What do the underlined words “cobwebs” and “dustbunnies” probably refer to?
Y. A happy atmosphere inside the home.   B. All her daughter’s toys.
C. Happy memories of a child.            D. Things that kept the mother busy.
Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
Z. Daughter and Her Doll   B. Daughter’s Words
Only One Childhood     D. A Busy Mother’s Change

While IQ ( Intelligence Quotient ) tells you how smart you are, EQ( Emotional Quotient ) tells you how well you use your smartness. Professor Salovey, the psychologist who invented the term EQ, said that at work it is IQ that gets you hired and EQ that gets you promoted.
Supported by his research, he suggested that when predicting future successes, a person’s brainpower, as measured by IQ tests, might actually matter less than a person’s character, or EQ.
Professor Salovey may be correct. For example, have you ever wondered why some of the best and quick-witted students in your class end up failing exams? Perhaps it is because of differences in a person’s EQ. People often make the mistake of thinking that EQ is the opposite of IQ. It is not. Although it is hoped that people have both high EQs and IQs, there is little doubt that those with low EQs have a harder time surviving in life.
For a long time, well-respected researchers discussed if a person’s IQ could be raised. The geneticists said no, while the social scientists disagreed. Furthermore, the social scientists said that it was possible to improve a person’s EQ, particularly in terms of “people skills”, such as understanding and communication.

Title Success comes with a ( 71 )_____ EQ
While IQ tells you how smart you are, EQ tells you how well you use your smartness.
IQ gets you hired and EQ gets you( 73 )_____.

A person’s IQ might be ( 75 ) ______ important than a person’s EQ. One example is that some of the best and quick-witted students in your class end in ( 76 ) ______ in exams. It’s quite ( 77 ) ______ that those with low EQs have a hard time surviving in life.
Professor Mayer found after being introduced to some disabled students, normal students were more willing to help people in trouble.          ( 78 ) ________, they showed a better understanding of the disabled students’ feelings. Meanwhile, there was a marked change in the disabled students’ attitudes and they became more ( 79 ) ________ towards life.
( 80 ) ________ A high IQ will help us in some ways but having a high EQ might help us even more.
Professor Mayer, recognized by many as a leading expert in the study of changes to people’s EQs, recently released the findings of a study on senior high school students. When some normal students were introduced to some disabled students, they found that afterwards they were more willing to help people in difficulties. They also showed a better understanding of the disabled students’ feelings compared to students who hadn’t been introduced to disabled students. At the same time, there was a marked change in the disabled students’ attitudes. They became more positive about their disabilities and were more eager to try new things. People with high EQs often have positive attitudes towards life and open minds to different ideas.
It is worth remembering that having a high IQ will help us in some ways but having a high EQ might help us even more.

W: No, not really. It helps that I’m a woman. There are a lot of women looking at cars and buying cars by themselves. A lot of them feel more comfortable talking to a woman. And you know, I like to talk.
M: How are the other salesmen?
W: Most of them are friendly. But there are two or three who don’t talk to me. And at lunch, when two or three go out together, they never ask me.
