A Beliefs form a big part of our life. Successful people have always believed that they can be and will be successful in their lives, such as Michael Phelps. Many of us have seen Michael Phelps win 8 gold medals in a single Olympic Games, which has created a history for him. Many people have admired his success and the first reaction in their mind will be, “Wow, how I wish I could be like him.” Have you wondered what brought him success? In fact, anyone can achieve what they have wanted to achieve. It is about beliefs. Everyone is a born winner and we are the winner in our lives. It is this belief that drives any individual to be successful in his or her own field. All successful individuals have strong beliefs in their lives and it is one of the bases for their success. If we start to believe in ourselves, the things that we can achieve will definitely give us a pleasant surprise. Other than having a strong belief, it is the attitude that drives the individuals to create their own history. The commitment (承诺,责任) towards themselves and the drive must also be present. Imagine having a strong belief in oneself and having a poor attitude towards life, then how would that individual turn out to be? One’s attitude comprises the drive, the commitment and the desire to achieve his goals. If one has strong beliefs about the goals that he can achieve and displays good attitudes towards it, it would be no surprise to anyone that he will be able to achieve his goals. Start believing in yourself that you can achieve your goals and with the right positive attitude, you will definitely be able to create the miracle (奇迹) that you have always dreamt of. 56. B A study involving 8,500 teenagers from all social backgrounds found that most of them are ignorant when it comes to money. The findings, the first in a series of reports from NatWest that has started a five-year research project into teenagers and money, are particularly worrying as this generation of young people is likely to be burdened with greater debts than any before. University tuition fees (学费) are currently capped at £3,000 annually, but this will be reviewed next year and the Government is under enormous pressure to raise the ceiling. In the research, the teenagers were presented with the terms of four different loans but 76 per cent failed to identify the cheapest. The young people also predicted that they would be earning on average £ 31,000 by the age of 25, although the average salary for those aged 22 to 29 is just £ 17,815. The teenagers expected to be in debt when they finished university or training, although half said that they assumed the debts would be less than £ 10,000. Average debts for graduates are £ 12,363. Stephen Moir, head of community investment at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which owns NatWest, said. "The more exposed young people are to financial issues, and the younger they become aware of them, the more likely they are to become responsible, forward-planning adults who manage their finances confidently and effectively." Ministers are deeply concerned about the financial pressures on teenagers and young people because of student loans and rising housing costs. They have just introduced new lessons in how to manage debts. Nikki Fair weather, aged 15, from
C While income worry is a rather common problem of the aged, loneliness is another problem that aged parents may face. Of all the reasons that explain their loneliness, a large geographical distance between parents and their children is the major one. This phenomenon is commonly known as “Empty Nest Syndrome (空巢综合症)”. In order to seek better chances outside their countries, many young people have gone abroad, leaving their parents behind with no clear idea of when they will return home. Their parents spend countless lonely days and nights, taking care of themselves, in the hope that someday their children will come back to stay with them. The fact that most of these young people have gone to Europeanized or Americanized societies makes it unlikely that they will hold as tightly to the value of duty as they would have if they had not left their countries. Whatever the case is, it has been noted that the values they hold do not necessarily match what they actually do. This geographical and cultural distance also prevents the grown-up children from providing response in time for their aged parents living by themselves. The situation in which grown-up children live far away from their aged parents has been described as “distant parent phenomenon”, which is common both in developed countries and in developing countries. However, our society has not yet been well prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome”. 63. Many young people have gone abroad, leaving their aged parents behind, to . A. realize their dreams in foreign countries B. live in the countries with more money C. continue their studies abroad D. seek a better place for their aged parents 64. If young people go abroad, . A. they do not hold to the value of duty at all B. they cannot do what they should for their parents C. they believe what they actually do is right D. they can give some help to their parents back home 65. From the last paragraph, we can infer that . . A. the aged parents are not fully prepared for “Empty Nest Syndrome” B. the situations in the developed and developing countries are different C. “Empty Nest Syndrome” has arrived unexpectedly in our society D. children will become independent as soon as they go abroad D School tearaways(不良少年) are to be offered mountain bikes and iPods in return for good behavior. In a campaign against indiscipline by the British government, teachers are being told to reward troublesome pupils with prizes and privileges. Badly behaved youngsters must be praised five times as often as they are punished or criticized under guidelines unveiled(透露)by Education Secretary Alan Johnson. The new government advice states that pupils should be given five rewards for every criticism or punishment. It says a reward sanctions(制裁) ratio of at least 5:1 is an indication of a school with an effective rewards and sanctions system. It goes on to tell teachers that a “positive” approach can improve relations with parents who are “tired” of receiving letters and phone calls about their children’s behavior. “ It has long been established that rewards are more effective than punishment in motivating pupils,” the guidelines say. “ by praising and rewarding positive behavior, others will be encouraged to act similarly.” Schools are told that they must avoid giving too much praise to well-behaved pupils. “It is advisable to pay attention to those who have previously been associated with poor behavior or who have been less likely to meet standards so that it is not always the same (“good”) pupils who receive praise and rewards.” Teachers are warned not to impose(强加) whole class detentions or other sanctions which ‘punish the innocent as well as the guilty’. And they are told : Staff should also consider when it might be more appropriate to, rather than impose a sanction, encourage pupils to reflect on the harmful effects of their misbehavior. 66. According to the new government advice, badly behaved students should ______ A. be criticized five times each time they are rewarded B. be rewarded much more than they are criticized C. receive more punishments than rewards D. have an equal rate of reward and punishment 67. What does the underlined word “detentions” in the passage mean? A. standards B. rewards C. punishments D. behaviors 68. We can infer from the passage that_________. A. the government campaign works well for hard working students B. many schools have an effective reward-and-sanction system C. praise doesn’t have much effect on well- behaved students D. rewards given at the right time can change the students’ behavior

F The world economy has run into a brick wall. Despite countless warnings in recent years about the need to address a potential hunger crisis in poor countries and an energy crisis worldwide, world leaders failed to think ahead. The result is a global food crisis. Wheat, corn and rice prices have more than doubled in the past two years. And oil prices have increased more than three times since the start of 2004. These food-price increases. combined with increasing energy costs, will slow if not stop economic growth in many parts of the world and will even affect political stability. Practical solutions to these problems do exist, but we'll have to start thinking ahead and acting globally.
