The train was gradually filled up with peasants travelling to market. And they were ready for the journey, their bags full of bread, cakes and coffee bottles for the twenty miles ahead. Outside the window, we saw fast express buses heading in the same direction as us. They were passing us so quickly that we couldn't even read their destination (目的地) boards. We were not quite reaching Selcut when a very important official entered the compartment and asked to see our tickets. And then clipped (在车票上剪孔) them. He was holding a railway timetable which showed on its cover a coloured photo of a shining truck racing over a long beautiful bridge that carried the railway across a deep valley.
It was 3:15 and raining when we pulled into Selcut. I said“pulled into”because we never actually stopped at Selcut. The train steamed through slowly and passed the end of the platform and then we all threw ourselves out: peasants, soldiers and several railway men.
On the platform we had to walk down a road and into the main entrance to get back to the platform. A pretty little girl, the daughter of a local railway official, explained to us in French that the last train back to Iznir left in just twenty-five minutes. That took a load off my mind.

Franz Schubert was a famous Austrian composer, and also one of the most famous musicians in the world, but he lived a very hard life and often suffered from hunger. He was very hungry one day and went into a small restaurant in Vienna, hoping he might meet some friend there. He looked round but found nobody he could borrow any money from. Then his eyes fell on a paper on one of the tables. In it was a little poem. He took the paper and read the poem. Then he composed a piece of music for the poem and took it to the owner of the restaurant. He only received a dish of beef and potato for it. Thirty years after his death, this manuscript (手稿) by Schubert was auctioned (拍卖) for 40,000 francs. It was his famous Berceuse(摇篮曲).

About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier, only about one in two hundred is affected(影响) in this matter. Perhaps , after all , it is safer to be driven by a woman!
There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man can not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shades of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green-a strange world indeed.
Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones” .These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods” but these are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us shape but no color.
Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes(蚊子)like blue but do not like yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will, in a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of he rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around.
