How To Select A Home Computer

Computers are very versatile. They can do many things: teaching, playing games, or helping with a business, so choosing a computer is not an easy, simple job. But if you follow these steps, you will find it easier. Fist, decide on the main reasons why you want a computer. Is this computer very useful for you? Is it the most important reason to play games or to help with your business or help with your schoolwork? Second, look carefully at the programs the computer can use. Some people also write their own programs. If you want to write your own, it is important to look at the computer language. Is it easy to learn? Third, decide the smallest or the least needs you have for your computer. What are the characteristics you would like to have? For example, do you want a typewriter keyboard? Is a color display important to you? Your use of the computer will help you decide which characteristics are necessary, which are nice, and which are unnecessary. Fourth, when you have limited your choices to a few computers, look at the secondary uses and programs. For example, if your main reason for buying a home computer is to play games, you may lake computer A instead of computer B because computer A also can be used as s word processor. Fifth, think of the price. There are prices to think about. The first price is the price you must pay to take the computer home. The second is the price of additional programs and possible additions that you might want to buy at a later date. Be sure to try out the computer before you buy it. Sales people at computer shops are happy to help you. 64. The underlined sentence “Computers are very versatile.” means            . Game can be both fun and difficult. Scrabble(拼字游戏)is a game I like most, but it is not an easy one. Henry Tom and I are going to play scrabble tonight. Henry cannot remember all the rules, so I will explain them. Do you want to learn? Listen carefully, and we will play later. Each player takes seven letters. Your letters might be A, S, T, E, B, P and L. You can spell many words with these letters. You can spell TABLE with five of them, and you can spell LAP, LET, SAT, BAT and others with three of them. But you cannot use names of persons, countries, or cities. You have to be careful. Some letters are worth more points than others. For example, A, E, L. S and T have one point each, B and P have three points each. The number of points can be different for words with the same number of letters. SAT will give you only three points, and BAT will give you give you five. TABLE will give you seven points: three for B and four for the other four letters. Use TABLE. You will get more points, and you might win the game. At the end of the game the players add up their points. The one with the most points wins. For example, you might have one hundred and forty points. That is a good score. But I might have one hundred and sixty points, and Henry might have one hundred and seventy points. Then Henry wins. Shall we play? 68. When you play scrabble, you       with seven letters. A. can spell AMERICA         B. may spell LONDON C. can spell many words       D. have to spell a three-or-five-letter word 69. Which of the following is NOT true? A. A word with seven letters is worth seven points. B. Some letters are worth more points than others. C. Different letters have different points. D. E doesn’t have so many points as B. 70. How many points will the word SLEPT give you? A. Seven                             B. Five               C. Six              D. Eight 71. The players add up their points when          . A. the game is over                                        B. they start to play game C. they are given seven letters                         D. they have more than one hundred points

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life: death and taxes. Americans do not have a corner on the “death” market, but many people feel that the United States leads the would with the worst taxes. Taxes consist of the money which people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States; federal(联邦的), state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes. Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand dollars per year must pay a certain percentage of their salaries to the federal (national ) government. The percentage varies for individuals. It depends on their salaries. The federal government has a two-level income tax; that is, 15 or 28 percent. $17,850 is the dividing point. The tax rate is 15 percent below $17,850 and 28 percent above. The second tax is for the state government: New York, California, North Dakota, or any of the other forty-seven states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item that you buy in that state. For example, a person might want to buy a package of gum(口香糖)for twenty-five cents. If there is a sales tax of eight percent in that state, then the cost of the gum is twenty-seven cents. The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (citizens who own a home have to pay taxes on it ) and excise(消费税) tax, which is collected on cars in a city. The cities use these funds for education, police and fire departments, public works (including street repairs, water and so on ) and municipal(市政的)buildings. Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. 72. What do Americans feel about their taxes? A. They are too low.                                       B. They should be paid once a week C. They are rather high.        D. They are acceptable 73. The income tax for $20,000 paid to the federal government is           . A. $3,00                              B. $ 5,600           C,.$ 1,600        D. $1,000 74. Which is included in the tax for the state government? A. Property tax.                   B. Excise tax.      C. Salary tax.    D. Sales tax. 75. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. America leads the world with a good tax system. B. People in some states have to pay income tax to both the federal and state government C. $ 17,850 is the average salary of Americans. D. Property tax is given on vehicles in a city.
