New York University has hundreds of young women in its freshman class this spring. But two stand out: The American TV stars-the Olsen twins.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen will celebrate their 19th birthday next month. They’ve been famous since they were nine months old, and now have their own line of films, books, dolls and clothing. Although the Olsens are in college full time, they aren’t absent owners of a business. They take care of their business through telephone conferences, examine product designs through email, and have face-to-face meetings with the managers.
Last fall, Mary-Kate and Ashley entered fortune magazine’s list of the richest people below the age of 40’It said their wealth was US$137million each. Hollywood Reporter magazine named them as two of the 100 most powerful women in Hollywood.
The twins were born in California in1986.Their careers began when their parents took them to an audition (试镜)for a TV show “Full House”. They were just nine months old. The producers were looking for twin girls to share the role of a baby. Tons of babies auditioned, but the Olsen twins were the only ones who didn’t cry — they got the job.
The show lasted until 1994 so the twins almost got to grow up in front of the camera They learned how to walk and ride a bike before the camera.
The Olsens have gone much further than acting since 1993 when their company Dualstar was founded in Los Angeles. Their lawyer Robert Thorne helped them manage it.
Thorne was thinking about an audience that, until then, had been forgotten by Hollywood: It was the 8-to-12-year-olds. These were too old for cartoons, but too young for teenage films.
Thorne did something brave. He made the twins have a final say on the product designs.
“They and I hire directors, hire writers and check everything they’re doing, ”says Thorne. “We do every-thing.”
The Olsens have always tried to sell a clean image. For that reason, people won’t see them at Hollywood parties.
