(D)
In a sense Evelyn and I have never been very close. He is more than five years my junior and that gap was made to seem greater when we were young. When he was a fag(受人使唤的低年级学生) at Lancing School, I was in the public eye. He thought of me as an uncle rather than as a brother. We have different tastes in many ways. He does not care for ball games and three-quarters of my English men friends are golfers. We belong to several London clubs, but we never have one in common. I should doubt if we have met twenty times in the last twenty years. During his early years I was seeing him every holiday and my father’s letters were full of news of him. Childhood contains significant clues to the eventual man. I naturally know things about him which no one else does. It is a responsibility as well as a privilege(特殊荣幸) to be the brother of as important a writer as Evelyn Waugh. He is in my opinion incomparably the finest novelist of our period. I constantly re-read his books with delight and admiration, and if by writing about his early days I could interpret him to his readers, if by explaining certain things about him I could increase the pleasure which they take in his work. But I am afraid that I might get the picture out of focus. I might lay the wrong emphasis on certain episodes(人生经历), and mislead rather than guide those readers. During the war Evelyn was once examined by a psychiatrist(精神病学家) to decide if he was fit for military work. When the examination came to an end, Evelyn said, “You have been asking me a great many questions, do you mind if I ask you one?” The psychiatrist said no. “Then why,” Evelyn said, “have you asked nothing about the most important thing in a man’s life, his religion?” That is where I lack the key to Evelyn. I cannot enter imaginatively into the mind of a person for whom religion is the dominant force in his life, as it is with Evelyn. You cannot appraise(评估) a stained-glass(彩色玻璃) window if you look at it from the outside, and not possessing the key to Evelyn’s nature I might give a misleading picture of him. So I have to confine(限制) myself to this short passage of gratitude for the great pleasure that his books have given me and for the high honour they have conferred(赋予) upon the name of Waugh. 76. Physicians’ fees are only one reason for rising health costs in the United States. Medical research has produced many tests to diagnose, or discover, patients’ illnesses. Physicians usually feel obliged to order enough tests to rule out all likely causes of a patient’s symptoms. A routine laboratory bill for blood tests can easily be more than $100.
81. ( )
Sophisticated new machines have been developed to enable physicians to scan body organs with a clarity never before possible. One technique involves the use of ultrasound – sound waves beyond the frequencies that human beings can hear – to produce images. Others use computers to capture and analyze images produced by X-rays or magnetic fields. These machines are extremely expensive: The price of a single machine can exceed one million dollars.
82. ( )
New technologies also mean new personnel. Physicians, nurses and orderlies can no longer staff a hospital alone. Hospitals now require a bewildering number of technical specialists to administer new tests and operate advanced medical equipment.
83. ( )
Physicians and hospitals also must buy malpractice insurance to protect themselves should they be sued for negligence by patients who feel they have been mistreated or have received inadequate care. The rates for this insurance have been risen very steeply in the last ten years, as patients have become more medically knowledgeable, and as juries sometimes awarded very large amounts of money to injured patients.
84. ( )
As a result, hospital costs and physicians’ fees rose steadily through the 1990s. Government agencies became convinced that it was necessary to limit rising medical costs. One approach is to require hospitals to prove that a need exists for new buildings and services. Hospitals also have faced pressure to run their operations more efficiently, and to decrease the duration of hospital stays for patients receiving routine treatment or minor surgery.
