Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) Farley Fire Department was called out late on Monday evening to deal with a fire at 6 Burghill Court, Farley Hill, the home of Miss Elizabeth West, 83. The fire started when the water heater in Miss West's kitchen exploded while she was having a bath. Fire fighters were quickly on the scene to put out the fire, thanks to the immediate action of a young couple living in the flat downstairs, Mr. and Mrs. Handley. Mrs. Handley dialed "119" while her husband rescued Miss West and turned off the gas to prevent a further explosion. Alan Blockley, head of the fire department, told our reporter that no serious damage had been done. This was largely due to Mr. and Mrs. Handley, whose speed in getting in touch with the fire department had prevented the fire from spreading to other houses in the neighbourhood. 71. (B) You get a terrible feeling when you find you've had a burglar. It isn't only anger against the thief and at your loss. It's much more. For months after my burglar came one night, I hated my house, though I knew it wasn't my house's fault-any more than Jack Larsen's loss was the fault of his house, Poor Jack suffered more: he lived only a month after his "burglars" came, so they were, in a way, his murderers.
Jack and I lived opposite each other on the edge of a village. It so happened that, last July, I had to go into hospital for a week. At the same time, Jack heard from Norway that his sister had died. So we were both away from our properties for about a week. He was due back the day before I was.
When Jack returned, his house was gone. All that remained was the hard base on which the house had stood. He went to the police, of course, and slow, legal inquires began. When I returned, he came to stay with me. We soon found out from various people what had happened. On the third day of our absence, some "workmen" in a lorry arrived at Jack's house. They claimed that they were there on the orders of the court. They said that the house was an illegal building and had to be removed before the owner returned. They even said that the police knew all about the case and told the village postman to deliver Mr. Larsen's letters to the police. It was all over in less than two days.
Jack went out of his mind. As I said, he didn't live long. It is January now, and so far the police haven't found the house or anything else. 74. Mr. Larson had all his properties stolen _____ before he returned. A. about two days B. a week C. only the night D. five days 正确答案是
75. The people at the village did not report the accident to the police at the time it happened most probably because _____. A. they believed what the thieves said at that time B. they knew nothing about the accident at all C. they did not know where the police station was D. the "workmen" were familiar to them 正确答案是
76. Mr. Larson died soon after he returned from Norway because _____. A. he was extremely tired after his journey to Norway B. he was severely hurt by the loss of all his properties C. the court accused him of building his house illegally D. he had been suffering from a serious disease for years 正确答案是
77. Which of the following statement id TRUE? A. It is already 5 months since Mr. Larson died. B. All the thieves have been arrested by the police now. C. The thief never stole anything from the story-teller's house. D. There were a lot of houses around Mr. Larson's house. 正确答案是
(C) To learn English well you must learn about yourself. You must discover what your own special needs are in English. You should pick out what makes English different from your own language and concentrate on those parts. And above all, you should pick out your own personal weaknesses in English, pick out your own special problems, find out what mistakes you most often make and make a list of them.
It will be best if, in your preparation, you can pratise doing the various sorts of work you will be asked to do in examination. You should then make a careful note of any mistakes you make more than once. Count up how many times you makes each mistake, and the mistake you make most often should be at the top of your list, the next most common in second place, and so on.
For example, if your own language is Japanese, you may find the problem of articles comes at the top of your list. If you speak German, you may find using some of the conjunctions is your biggest problem. If your mother tongue is French, you find you are always having trouble with some of prepositions. And if Italian is your language, you may constantly forget to use a suitable pronoun when you should.
But these are only examples of mistakes typical of certain languages. They may or may not be your particular personal mistakes. As I say, these personal ones are the most important of all to discover. 78. To learn English well the most important thing is to _____.
