Making friends is a skill like most skills. It improves with practice. If you want to meet people and make friends, you must be willing to take some action. You must first go where there are people. You won’t make friends staying home alone. Join a club or a group. Talking with those who like the same things as you do is much easier. Or join someone in some activity. Many people are nervous when talking to new people. After all meeting strangers means facing the unknown. And it’s human nature to feel a bit uncomfortable about the unknown. Most of our fears about dealing with new people come from doubts about ourselves. We imagine other people are judging us or finding us too tall or too short, too this or too that. But don’t forget that they must be feeling the same way. Try to accept yourself as you are, and try to put the other person at ease. You’ll both fell more comfortable. Try to act self-confident even if you don’t feel that way. When you enter a room full of strangers, such as a new classroom, walk tall and straight, look directly at other people and smile. If you see someone you’d like to speak to, say something. Don’t wait for the other person to start a conversation. Just meeting someone new does not mean that you will make friends with that person-friendship is based on mutual(互相的) liking and “give and take”. It takes time and effort to develop. 64. San Francisco is where I grew up between the ages of two and ten and where I lived for a period when I was about 13 and again as a married man from the ages of 37 to 51. My mother, who is now 90, still lives in Los Gatos, about 60 miles south of San Francisco. I settled in London over 25 years ago. I was born in New York and love the United States. I have grown new roots in London as I did in France and if I were asked now where I want to live for ever, I would say London. But I will always remain an American citizen. San Francisco, like London, has many parks. Every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the parks as children. I didn’t go to school. My whole formal education lasted three hours when I was five. I was sent to school but came home at noon on the first day said I didn’t enjoy it, so I hadn’t learned anything. My parents decided, wisely I think, that school was not for me and I never went back. My mother then took over my education and brought up my two sisters and more rather in the way of an English lady who had good education. A lot of attention was paid to languages and reading rather than sciences and mathematics. Sometimes she taught us herself, but we also had other teachers and we were required to takes to takes lessons every day. I practiced and practiced and one morning woke everybody up with my ‘r’ s. I got the toy train. I usually get the things I want in life-but I work hard for them. 68. “The more you give, the more you get” creates a lifestyle that can bring rewards. What is its power? One businessman in the communications field put if this way to us. “ I have made millions,” he said, “just by getting up every morning and asking myself, ‘How can I make my customers happy today?’” The more he gave, the more he got. It’s a concept(概念)of service. As Editor-Publisher of New World Journal, I’ve seen its power in my own life. In college, I began working as a volunteer consultant to small minority(少数人)-owned businesses. Never will I forget the very first company I worked with. Within just two months, I could look at 30 new employees and realized I had helped create those jobs. That experience helped me get my first job. I was a consultant, working primarily with film companies in Hollywood. On my own time, I soon began working in East Los Angeles. Once again I was a volunteer consultant, doing much the same work for small companies as I had done in college. Soon requests from these companies became so great that they hired my firm. Based on these first projects my firm created a minority-owned division(部门). At the same time, the federal government was starting a program to help such minority-owned businesses, and so the firm developed rapidly, based itself in Washington, and quickly grew to a staff(全体职工)of some 40 members. And now I have been an Editor-Publisher for a dozen years, publishing Manhattan Magazine for the past 10 years. I think the best thing I did for that business was to introduce this concept. We set up an organization to help raise funds(资金)for very special local charities. In addition to meeting its goal and helping those in need, I was happily surprised to discover benefits in return. 72. According to the text, what is the concept of service? A. Making millions of money.   B. Getting up early every morning C. Trying to make customers happy.                    D. The more you give, the more you get. 73. The author reviews his career experiences in order to        . A. show his rich experience       B. show another well-paid job C. prove the concept of service  D. formalize the philosophy of his own 74. The writer is probably a           .
