"If anything, the situation has got much, much worse. We now have kids as young as eight and women in old people's homes worried about the way they look." Orbach said.

Even though it has been proved that repeated dieting results in a little more than regaining most of the lost weight, constant dieting has become a way of life for many women. 48 per cent of British women aged 25 to 35 were on some kind of diet and 20 per cent of young women dieted all or most of time. Some of them said they would pop a pill to give them their beautiful shape, even if it meant risking

their health. Worldwide, 70 million people have an eating disorder. Most are women, but men are increasingly affected, too.

More than half the women and two thirds of the men in Britain weigh too much. while in the United States more than one quarter of adults and about one in five children are overweight. The idea that female beauty is a very thin body could be changed, if clothing factories and magazines showed images(形象) of women of all shapes instead of selecting skeletal-like models and stick-thin actress.

But that is easier said than done.

To get the message across, Orbach is also considering talking to pop stars such as Victoria Beckham and Geri Halliwell, both of whom have admitted having suffered from eating disorders.

Experts have put forward detailed plans for a tunnel to join Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.

The shortest proposed route would be 126 kilometers- more than twice the length of the English Channel Tunnel. And the longest proposed route would be 207 kilometers.

A recent conference in Xiamen, Fujian Province brought together more than 70 experts. The event was co-sponsored(共同发起) by universities from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland.

Fujian is the province where both proposed routes would begin.

There is no direct passenger access between the mainland and Taiwan by air or sea at the moment.

Experts say that it is better to start research sooner rather than later, although there is a lack of government funding. There are no technical problems to build a Taiwan tunnel. But it will require an improved political relationship across the Straits(海峡).

A professor of Tsinghua University said, "A special feature of huge projects is that the period of preparation is longer than the period of construction."

For example, he said, the English Channel Tunnel took 14 years of planning and had been discussed for two centuries. And preparations for the huge Three Gorges(三峡) dam on the Yangtze River began in the 1950s.

The Xiamen conference focused on the longest southern route, which would use the Taiwan-controlled islands of Jinmen and Penghu as stepping stones.

The first stage of the new project could be a bridge to cross the five kilometers between Xiamen and Jinmen. This would mean that traveling from Xiamen to Jinmen by car would only take five minutes.

The longest tunnel now being planned anywhere in the world is the 54-kilomctre land tunnel to link Lyon in France with Turin in Italy. The tunnel will not be completed until 2015~2020.

64. Which is the longest tunnel in the world at present?

A. The English Channel Tunnel.

B. The tunnel between Lyon and Turin.

C. The Taiwan Straits tunnel.

    D. The passage doesn't mention it.

65. The example of English Channel Tunnel shows _______.

    A. it's not easy to complete a huge project

B. there are many problems to be solved before doing something

    C. discussions among countries usually take a lot of time

    D. the preparation takes longer time than the construction

66. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Universities both at home and abroad have sponsored the plan.

B. If the project is completed, the world's longest tunnel will appear.

C. You can't reach Taiwan from the mainland directly at present.

D. The starting point of the proposed tunnel is in Fujian.

67. What is the possible difficulty in carrying out the plan?

   A. The lack of money for the project from the governments.

   B. Improving the relationship between Taiwan and the mainland.

 C. The detailed plans for the tunnel.

   D. The technical problems with the tunnel.

At a recent luncheon(午餐会), Yao Ming, an outstanding Chinese basketball player, was introduced to the CEOs of IBM, Fedex. Motorola, Disney, AOL Time Warner and the visiting Chinese President, Jiang Zemin. Other deals include Nike (which predated his arrival in the NBA last fall),a two-year deal with Sorrento, a company that develops video games for mobile phones and other wireless devices in Asia and a Chinese wireless provider called China Unicom.

Ultimately, Yao is expected to earn much more in endorsement deals than his four-year,$18-million salary to play center for the Houston Rockets.

"His amiable(和蔼可亲的)personality is real," said Jimmy Siegel, who as vice-chairman, senior executive director at BBDO New York was behind Yao's “Yo! ”commercial for the Visa Check Card.

“He's very much what you'd imagine.” said Siegel. “He's very modest,

down-to-earth, somewhat self-effacing(不爱抛头露面的)and quiet——but I think that’s part of the language barrier(障碍).”

Despite all the attention, Ming's bank account(帐户) is still far from Jordan's or Woods’. They each earn between $40 million and $60 million annually in endorsements.

And unlike Jordan and Woods ---  who are unquestionably the best in the world at what they do there's no way to know how long Ming will remain king of the NBA——  he’s only been here for six months.

68. Who have/ has contacted with Yao Ming recently?

    A. CEOs of IBM, Motorola, Disney, AOL Time Warner.

B. Visiting Chinese President Hu Jintao.

C. Sorrent, vice-chairman of BBDO New York.

D.    All of the above.
