According to psychologists (心理学家),an emotion is aroused(唤起、激起) when a man or an animal views something as either bad or good. When a person feels like running away form something that he thinks will hurt him, we call this emotion fear. If the person wants to remove the danger by attacking it, we call the emotion anger. The emotions of joy and love are aroused when we think something can help us. An emotion does not have to be created by something in the outside world. It can be created by a person’s thoughts. Everyone has emotions. Many psychologists believe that infants(婴幼儿)are born without emotions. They believe children learn emotions just as they learn to read and write. A growing child not only learns his emotions but learns how to act in certain situations because of an emotion. Psychologists think that there are two types of emotion: positive and negative. Positive emotions include love, liking, joy, delight, and hope. They are aroused by something that appeals to(向人恳求) a person. Negative emotions make a person unhappy or dissatisfied. They include anger, fear, despair, sadness, and disgust. In growing up, a person learns to cope with (与……对抗) the negative emotions in order to be happy. Emotions may be weak or strong. Some strong emotions are so unpleasant that a person will try any means to escape from them. In order to feel happy, the person may choose unusual ways to avoid the emotion. Strong emotions can make it hard to think and to solve problems. They may prevent a person from learning or paying attention to what he is doing. For example, a student taking an examination may be so worried about failing that he cannot think properly. The worry drains (耗尽)valuable mental energy he needs for the examination. 63. The phone is ringing at the other end of the line and it clicks as it is being answered. A voice says quickly, “Hello! Will you hold, please?” Then there is another click, followed by silence. It seems like hours before someone comes back on the line----that is, if you don’t hang up first. Office calls are, perhaps, the most difficult and the most important part of a secretary’s work. The first impression that a client(当事人) recessives (有倒退倾向) about a business is very often through a telephone contact. A caller who is left hanging on “hold” will get the feeling that he or she has been forgotten or ignored. If a call is answered rudely, the caller may become angry. And if the call is not routed directly to the right person, the caller may feel that he or she is getting the “runaround”. Laura Neelham is a secretary in the executive offices of a large manufacturing (生产,制造) company. As a good secretary, Laura knows that all phone calls must be answered promptly and handled efficiently. She knows that a secretary must be pleasant and helpful, no matter how busy she is or what kind of mood she may be in. She knows she must keep calm if a caller gets impatient or becomes angry; also, of course, she knows she can never allow herself to lose her temper. If she does not have the information the caller asks for, she must know who does have the information. Finally, she knows that one of her most important responsibilities is to “screen” telephone calls and to know which calls to refer to her boss, which calls to refer to other people, and which calls to handle herself. A well-handled telephone call will give the caller a good impression of the company he or she is dealing with. For this reason, an office secretary who can handle telephone calls cheerfully, and efficiently is a valuable asset to any organization. 67. What do you think about “to handle phone calls”? A. Goal chances came and goal chances went. But two of the world’s highest-ranked teams----with some of football’s highest-paid players----couldn’t get the ball into the net. And they were playing against sides that had only just made it to the Word Cup. With two defeats, one draw and no goals, D.
