My friend Michelle is blind, but you’d never know it.  She makes such good use of her other  senses, including her "sixth sense", that she rarely gives the impression that she's   21  anything.

I   23  this the first time after my six-year-old daughter, Kayla, went to play there. When Kayla came home, she was very   24  about her day. She told me they had baked cookies, played games and done art projects. But she was especially excited about her finger-painting project.

“Mom, guess what?” said Kayla, all smiles. “I learned how to   25  colors today! Blue and red make purple, and yellow and blue make green! And Michelle painted with us”.

To my great   26  , my child had learnt about color from a blind friend! Then Kayla continued, “Michelle told me my picture showed joy, pride and a sense of accomplishment. She really  27   what I was doing!” Kayla said she had never known how good finger paints felt   until Michelle showed her how to paint without looking at her paper.

I realized Kayla didn't know that Michelle was blind. It had just never come up in conversation. When I told my daughter that Michelle was blind, she was   28  for a moment. At first, she didn't believe me. “But Mommy, Michelle knew exactly what was in my picture!” Kayla  29  . And I knew my child was right because Michelle had listened to Kayla describe her art work. Michelle had also heard Kayla's   30  in her work.

We were silent for a minute. Then Kayla said slowly, “You know, Mommy, Michelle really did ‘see’ my picture. She just used my eyes”

Indeed, she uses a special type of “vision” that all mothers have.

We all know that everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey.

General differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel (擅长) at recalling information from their brain's files .Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed. Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline. Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England.

Scientists surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范畴) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men usually excel; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.

41.The underlined word in the second paragraph means_________.

      A.natural               B.great                 C.obvious             D.absolute

42.According to the passage, which of the following can Not be typed into the same category?

      B.Women stand out at remembering people’s names.

      C.Men excel at typing as many words in a particular category as possible in the given time.

      D.Women excel at dealing mathematic problems.

44.One important factor that affects the correctness of the results is that _________.

      A.the old men tested may not have shown such cognitive decline

      B.people surveyed are all old

      C.people taking part in this test came from all over the world

      D.women live longer than men

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first  impression of a people based on the color of a person’s skin or the  manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by  words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication  systems, such as body behaviors. Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of  others to learn about their affective emotional states .Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness—so we can express them without ever saying a word .For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.

Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More  importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.

Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. Turning Waste into Energy

    Everyday rubbish could provide a valuable source of energy thanks to a clever new invention Smelly methane(沼气)gas expelled from landfill sites containing tones of rotting household waste could be used to produce a valuable energy resource In Europe alone landfill tips can produce 94 billion cubic meters of methane per year but currently only one per cent of what could be a valuable source of energy is used,the rest is burnt off to prevent an explosive build-up of gas.

    Methane gas forms when organic matter breaks down and is drawn off from large rubbish tips by pipes sunk into the middle of the waste.Until now this process wasn’t possible on small sites because the pipes allowed oxygen to seep(渗入)in and that stopped the breakdown process.

    Viktor Popov of the Wessex Institute of Technology has now developed a system to modify existing landfill sites by making them airtight while the methane is extracted from sunken wells.The site is covered by a special three-layered skin whose two outer layers are made of clay with a pressurized layer of carbon dioxide gas in the middle.As the methane is sucked out through a central well it is replaced by carbon dioxide from the middle layer rather than oxygen,allowing the breakdown process to continue.

Unfortunately there are no plans to use the power of methane even though Popov claims his invention could provide a valuable source of energy over the next 20 years.

51.The passage mainly introduces __________to us

    A.how to make methane

    B.a new way to make use of rubbish-

    C.the valuable things in rubbish

D.the amount of rubbish being reused

52.From the passage we can see that____________.

    A.in Europe 94 billion cubic meters of methane is produced every year

    B.some of the waste must explode if it is not burnt off

    C.99%of the methane has been burnt off in Europe

    D.only a very small part of the rubbish is used in Europe

53.In this passage the underlined word “that” refers to“ _________”.

    A.methane gas    B.the long pipe    C.oxygen  D.waste

54.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?

    A.Oxygen can cause the breakdown process to stop.

    B.When the methane is sucked out,oxygen will enter from the middle layer.

    C.Carbon dioxide doesn’t affect the breakdown process.

    D.The dew invention has not been put into use

55.According to the passage,what is the public’s attitude towards the use of methane power?

 A.Favorable.   B.Unfavorable.    C.Responsive.    D Indifferent.

I’m very grateful for the efforts of our parents and teachers. I’m determined to try my best to prepare for the exams.

第二节  读写任务  (共1小题,满分25分)

  阅读下面文章,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文

Whether we like it or not, our parents are responsible for us at least until we're out of high school. So rather than getting upset about that fact, maybe we should focus on ways to make our relationship better. The best way to do that, in my opinion, is to learn to really communicate with our parents.
So here is my three-step program to make it easier to communicate with your parents...
Step 1: Stop
When I find myself arguing with my mom or dad, I try to stop. That's right. I just try to hush up for a minute, because chances are good that I'm being defensive or confrontational -- and neither one of those is constructive.
If I can manage to stop myself from talking, I usually find that I can calm down quickly. I guess I'm usually acting out of emotion rather than logic or reason. But if I can quit arguing for a minute, it seems that my perspective changes and I start to realize that I'm being a bit childish. Emotionally I may still be upset, but logically I understand that yelling and fighting definitely doesn't make things better!
Step 2: Look
Once I've stopped arguing, I look my parents in the eye. You'd be amazed at how much easier it is to communicate with your parents when you're actually looking at them. Looking away doesn't do much of anything except give them the impression that I'm not listening or that I don't care.
Also, when I'm looking away it's easy to start thinking about what I'm going to say next, instead of concentrating on what my parents are saying to me. It's much easier to see things eye-to-eye when you're physically seeing eye-to-eye.
Step 3: Listen
Finally, I listen to what they're saying (or at least I try). Communication can't happen unless both sides hear -- and listen to -- each other. There is nothing wrong with my hearing, but that doesn't mean I always listen to the sounds that people are making. When I argue with my parents, I can physically hear what they're saying without mentally listening to it.
Whether I want to admit it or not, my mom and dad have been on this earth a lot longer than I have -- and their experience can actually help them give some pretty sound advice at times. But if that advice falls on proverbial "deaf ears", it's not going to make much of a difference.
That's why I try to stop, look, and listen instead of arguing with my parents. I don't always agree with them -- even after I've heard them out -- but I think it's safe to say that it truly has helped our relationship over the long run.
写作内容:

  你在某英文报刊看到这则报导后,准备就我们学生该”如何与父母沟通”写一篇文章给该报编辑部,题目是“How to communicate with parents?”。 内容要点包括:

1.以约30词简要概括新闻内容;

2.然后以约120词谈谈你的观点,内容包括:

  (1)由于代沟的原因,有时与父辈的冲突在所难免;与其抱怨不如想些措施改善与他们之间的关系;

  (2)你为改善关系与所采取的一些措施:

A.与父母多交流,跟他们讲一下每天发生的事情;

B.冲突发生时不要争吵,而是要以商讨的方式来解决问题;

C.其它一些你认为有效的措施.

写作要求:

 1. 可以使用实例或其他论述方法支持你的论点,也可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子;

 2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称;

 3. 文章开头己给出,不计入单词总数。

评分标准:

概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,篇章连贯。

参考答案:

As can be seen in the passage, a better relationship with parents can be made by stopping arguing with them, looking them in the eyes and listening to them.

It’s true that there’s always conflicts because of a generation gap. It’s wise to find some ways to bridge the gap instead of complaining.

First , I will talk to my parents about everyday things. It is a way of building a strong connection. Let my parents know I want their full attention by telling them I have something important I need to talk to them about instead of saying when they have time I would like to speak to them. And then pick a time that is best for both of us. Secondly, Don't argue; negotiate instead when I’m angry. My parents probably won't consider my point of view if I’m yelling at them. And I’m less likely to express myself well if I’m angry.
Finally, I will focus on good memories I have of my parents. Think of their talents and strengths. Remember something they did that impressed me.
   A good relationship with parents can make one a better and happier person. it is worth every effort.
