第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题。每小题1分;满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

A

There are a number of phrases built on the word “put”, among which is the

expression “putting one on”. When one finds it difficult to believe what you said, he may look at you more closely and ask: “ Are you putting me on?” He doesn’t think you are serious. Perhaps, you are joking with him, teasing him, trying to test his reaction.

People who try to put you on are more often just joking, having some pleasant friendly fun. There are people who like to play practical jokes on friends, to put them on in strange ways, some funny, some not. This is especially true on April 1st, April Fool’s Day. Year after year, numbers of people let themselves be fooled by the same joke. They just forget what had happened to them the year before. One of these often repeated jokes is a telephone call. The caller changes his voice and tells his friend a certain Mr. Fox calls you and asks you to make a quick reply to the given number, which is the telephone number of the National Zoo.

Unthinkingly, the friend quickly makes his call and asks for Mr. Fox.

The man on the other end says: “Who?”

“Mr. Fox. I don’t know his first name. Please hurry?”

The man at the other end answers: “We have no Mr. Fox here.” Then he realizes it is a joke and one he has heard before. And he begins to laugh and says: “Look, friend, this is the zoo. Somebody is pulling your leg, putting you on.”

“Good God!” you say to yourself: “What an idiot I am!” But you think about it and you can’t help having a good laugh over it.

56. “Put one on” means ___________________.

A. to play tricks on somebody.

B. to give someone a phone call.

C. to lift somebody onto a higher place.

D. to joke with someone to see what he will react to it.

57. Why are people repeatedly fooled on April Fool’s Day?

A. They are also fond of fun.

B. They are forgetful.

C. They don’t take the same joke seriously.

D. Their legs are pulled by someone.

58. Mr. Jones can’t speak to Mr. Fox because ___________.

                英试共11页 第 6 页

A. the one who answered the phone didn’t know Mr. Fox.

B. Mr. fox happened to be out at that time.

C. he called the wrong number and the wrong place.

D. this Mr. Fox turned out to be an animal.

59. This article is mainly about _______________.

A. the jokes people are likely to make on April Fool’s Day.

B. April 1s, a day when people will make fun of each other.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labour through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(自言自语)as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarreling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent(程度) by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn (哈欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do dairy work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration(集中) for your sharper hours.

60. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ______________.

A. he is a lazy person

B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

C. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

D. he is not sure when his energy is low

C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

________.

A. change his energy cycle B. overcome his laziness

New York --- Elizabeth Hartley and Emlyn Philbert could have hung up when

a woman with slurred(含糊不清) speed called to say goodbye. It was obviously a wrong number.

But they kept her on the phone for nearly an hour as she drifted in and out of

consciousness(知觉), reaching from New York City to Virginia to save her life.

The strange connection was made on January 27 when the 55-year-old woman, misdialed and rang the J. Streicher Company, a securities lending firm where Hartley and Philber work in sales.

“She asked to speak to Liz and I got on the phone,” said Hartley, 48, of Ruther-ford, New Jersey. Right away, she knew the woman was in trouble.

Hartley signaled her co-worker to pick up the phone. For the next 45 minutes, they listened and tried to give comfort as the woman, often incoherent because of the combination of alcohol(酒精) and pills police said she had swallowed, told them about her spoiled life.

Ms Philbert made her believe that she was “Liz,” and told her she loved her.

She managed to get the woman’s name, address and telephone number and kept her talking while Hartley called police in Hampton, Virginia.

The woman, who was semiconscious when police arrived, would likely

have died if not for the two women, said Sergeant Jeff Walden, a Hampton police

What makes a good school? Many people would agree that a good school is one that gets the best out of its pupils. Yet not every pupil can get straight as in his or her exams. What is most important is the individual development of the child and not the general academic success of the school. Yet how can this be measured and improvements made? This question has been at the heart of my work for the last 20 years. All the facts shows that the quality of an individual school can make a significant difference to its pupils’ prospects (前途) in life. My definition(定义) of a good school is one in which students progress further than might be expected considering their social background. Inner-city school, for example, despite receiving many socially-disadvantaged pupils, can still be successful in encouraging their students to progress.

We should recognize that the effectiveness of a school can only be considered in relation to its typical intake(吸入量). Researchers have discovered a number of factors commonly connected with good schools. There are few surprises among a collection which includes professional leadership, high expectations, and a concentration on teaching and learning. Recognition of the importance of pupils’ rights and responsibilities and parental involvement is also important.

69.The underlined word this question refers to a search for ___________.

A. what qualities make a good school

B. why we have to get the best out of pupils

C. the way to make a school the most academically outstanding

D. how to measure school effectiveness

_________.

A. surprising B. expected C. scientific D. new

in part to their _______.

A. complexity (复杂)of structure B. mixture of policies

C. intake of less able students D. poor standard of school staff(员工)
