Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life-threatening situation. On August 29, she got her answer. While she was driving on a road, a big truck hit its head on a pickup car. The pickup car burst into flames. Kristy rushed out and ran to the pickup. Two farmers, Dean Berhard, 51, and his brother Donald, 44, were inside.

When she got close, Kristy could see the unconscious driver. The other man was under the passenger seat. Kristy says, “The smells were sickening. I was afraid the truck would blow up and kill us all.”

The driver of the big truck was struggling to open the passenger door, so Kristy rushed to the driver’s side. Finally they opened the door. She reached in, seized the driver and , to her horror, felt her hands sink into his chest. She quickly dragged the man to safety on the roadside, then hurried back. As Kristy stared down the ditch (水沟) with the passenger, the pickup blew up. She jumped on top of him and they both rolled to safety.

When the police arrived a while later, Kristy started crying, “I want my mum.” In fact she cried for the next three months.

Today the two farmers, each the father of two children, are good friends with Kristy. To show their deep appreciation, they bought her a ring with nine diamonds ?Done for each member of their immediate families, and ninth for her.

Thirty- two people watched Kitty Genovese being killed right below their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this in gunman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellowman?

“Not so,”say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to research into the reasons why people didn’t act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency(紧急情况). Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the side - walk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma(昏迷) from a headache? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk? Is the smoke coming into the room from a leak(漏洞)in the air conditioning? Is it “steam pipes”? Or is it really smoke from a fire? It’s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency. Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible(负责任的). He must feel that he must help, or the person won’t get the help he needs.

The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be “tested.”Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. The researchers started them off on the “tests.”Then they went into the next room. A curtain divided the “testing room”and the room into which they went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of bookshelves falling and a cry for help. All of this had been prerecorded on a tape recorder.

Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped.

In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn’t. They do not feel any direct responsibility.

Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were shocked, they sweated, and they had trembling hands. They felt the other person’s trouble. But they did not act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.

60.The purpose of this passage is ________.

A.to explain why people fail to act in emergencies

B.to explain when people will act in emergencies

C.to explain what people will do in emergencies

D.to explain how people feel in emergencies

61.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.When a person tries to help others, he must be clear that there is a real emergency.

B.When a person tries to help others, he should know whether they are worth his help.

C.A person must take the full responsibility for the safety of those in emergencies if he wants to help.

D.A person with a heart attack needs the most.

62.The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that ________.

  A.they are afraid of emergencies

B.they are not willing to get themselves involved

C.others will act if they themselves hesitate

D.they do not have any direct responsibility for those who need help

63.The author suggests that ________.

A.we shouldn’t blame a person if he fails to act in emergencies

B.a person must feel guilty if he fails to help

C.people should be responsible for themselves in emergencies

C

When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world’s great religions (宗教) order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally (道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil (恶行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take sway the moral goodness of the giver.

64.What is mainly discussed in the passage?

A.Moral deeds of people.                             B.Religious activities of the church.

C.Moral goodness of the giver.                       D.Arguments on giving to beggars.

65.What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed ?” in the second paragraph?

A.People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village.

B.Some people will not do what was morally right in the past .

C.We don’t meet with those who need help any more.

D.Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.

66.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.

B.Some beggars want money to help their children go to school.

C.Some beggars use the money to buy drugs.

D.Some beggars have no excuse for begging.

67.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because       .

    A. the cases can be so different                      B.there are so many beggars

C.there is so much money wasted    D.there are so many different arguments

D

Tim Welford, aged 33, and Dom Mee, aged 30, both from England, were keen on (=like... very much) rowing boats. They made a plan to row across the Pacific Ocean from Japan to San Francisco. The name of their rowboat was “Crackers”. It was about seven meters long.

                                                         Yours truly,

1?D5 BACBC      6?D10 BCABA     11?D15 CCBBA     16?D20 BABCC

37.选A。

40.选A。

42.选C。set fire to意思为“使。。。着火”。

43.选A。

46.选B。full off…

47.选A。

49.选C。make sb. do sth.

50.选B。some time意思为“一段时间”;sometime意思为“某时”;a few times意思为“几次”;sometimes意思为“有时候”。

53.选B。when表示“当。。。时候”;while表示“在。。。期间”,其后从句的动词必须是延续性动词。

54.选C。hear意思为“听见”;listen to表示听的动作,意思为“听“。

55.选B。in the distance为一固定短语,意思为“在远处”。

第三部分  阅读理解

56?D60 CDCBB  61?D65 CDADB  66?D70 BADCB  71?D75 BBDAC

57.由第一句 “Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life-threatening situation.”

on the line相当于in time of danger。put one’s life on the line的意思是“将自己的生命置之度外”。

59.由首句 “Kristy, 28, a cook in La Gross, often wondered what she’d do in a life-threatening situation.”

62.根据They do not feel any direct responsibility.

68.依据They set out from Japan on May 17, 2001. They had rowed nearly 5,500 miles when their boat was hit by a fishing ship on September 17, 2001.

69.根据A fishing ship came towards us with nobody on the bridge and ran us down.

71.依据Tim Welford, aged 33, and Dom Mee, aged 30, both from England, were keen on(=like... very much)rowing boats.

75.从木匠的答语 “I think I understand the situation. I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.”

76.去掉 with  77.so→but  78.died→dead  79.1uck→lucky  80.  student→students    81.but后加to  82.quality前加the  83.√  84.tasted→tasting/tasty  85.their→its

                                                       May 25, 2002

 Dear editor

??    I’d like to tell you something about the problem of pollution that we are facing.

There is a chemical plant near our school. It gives off heavy smoke all day long. Very loud noises hurt our ears. Lots of rubbish, such as plastics and rubber, is thrown here and there. It also sends out polluted water. All this has done great harm to the teachers and students in our school.

Our schoolmaster took the matter up with the director of the plant many times. But little has been done to change the situation. I don’t think we can study well until the problem is solved. Therefore, more and more teachers and students have come to realize how serious the problem is! We do hope you will support and help us.

                                                         Yours truly,

(Text 1)

M:How did th party go, Patty?

W:Of the 20 invited, 12 people turned up, but half left early.

(Text 2)

M:We have to go. It’s a quarter to seven now. The concert starts in 15 minutes.

W:Sorry. I’ll be ready in a minute.

(Text 3)

W:What kind of music do you like?

M:I really enjoy pop music. How about you?

W:I also like pop music. But classical music is even more enjoyable.

(Text 4)

M:I put on my hat and was about to go out for a meet?ing when I heard your telephone call.

W:I’m sorry to put you through some trouble, Mr Smith.

(Text 5)

M:It’s always been hard to get this car to good work.

W:If you’ll leave the car with me, I’ll get it fixed for you this afternoon.

(Text 6)

M:Hi, Wang, Thanksgiving is this Thursday. Do you have any plans?

W:No, not really. We don’t have this holiday in China, so I’ve never thought of celebrating it.

M:If you don’t have any plans, why don’t you come with me and spend a day at my parents?

W:Um, that’s very nice of you, but won’t that be too much trouble for your parents?

M:No. They’re preparing for a gathering anyway, and I’m sure they’ll like to have a guest from China. I’ll give them a call so it won’t be a total surprise.

W:Thanks for your invitation then.

(Text 7)

M:Did you take these pictures? They are very good.

W:Yes, I think they turned out well too. I like to take my camera with me wherever I go. If I see something interesting, I can take a picture of it.

M:Carrying a big camera around is too much trouble for me.

W:My camera is small, here, let me show you.

M:That’s really a small camera. It’s very nice.

W:And it’s simple to operate.

M:Is a camera like this very expensive?

W:Less than you expect. Why don’t you check the price at the supermarket down the street? This model was on sale there last week.

M:I think I will go and have a look.

(Text 8)

W:Excuse me, officer. Could you tell me how often the No. 6 bus comes?

M:You just missed it, ma’am, but there’s another one in half an hour.

W:Oh, no! Then could you tell me where Adam Street is?

M:Two blocks east and one block north, ma’am;

W:Thank you. And just one more thing, do you know where the nearest restroom is?

M:Right behind you, ma’am. See that sign?

W:Oh! Thanks a lot.

(Text 9)

W:Could you do something for me, please?

M:Certainly! What would you like me to do?

W:Well, do you know I’m going to Shanghai next week for a holiday?

M:Yes.

W:Well, I can’t take my bird with us. Could you look after her for me while we’re away?

M:With pleasure.

W:Are you sure you don’t mind?

M:Yes, of course I’m sure. I’d love to look after her. Glad to help! What do I have to do?

W:I’ve written everything down on this list.

M:Good, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of her.

W:I’m sure you will.

(Text 10)

I am working in the Green Park Zoo in southeast of London. I’m an animal keeper. One morning I went to work as usual. When I got to the zoo, my fellow told me that a young lion escaped from the zoo because of the hurricane the night before. Mr Charles, the manager, told us to get ready to search for the lion at any time when needed.

At about twenty in the afternoon, we were told to set out at once, for it was reported that the lion had appeared in the bushes in a lady’s garden. We drove our car as fast as we could. When we got there we found the garden had already been surrounded by the police. And the lion could be seen in the bushes, eating something. We walked quietly towards the bushes. As we got near, I pointed my pipe at the lion and fired. The lion made a sudden angry noise and struggled to its feet, but failed. It fell over and lay still. In this way we caught the lion and took it to the zoo.
